ENGLAND CRICKETERS RETURN TO RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR CANCER CHARITY
04 June 2010
Some of England’s best loved cricketers hope to raise thousands of pounds for a leading cancer charity next month.
Former stars including Derek Randall and John Lever will turn out for an Old England XI at Neston Cricket Club in aid of North West Cancer Research Fund.
The charity, which has its head office in Liverpool, raises money to pay for fundamental cancer research, which plays a vital role in finding breakthroughs into the treatment of the disease.
The team played for the first time in aid of NWCRF last year and enjoyed the experience so much they committed to returning again this summer.
Neston Cricket Club will again play host to the match which will see the Old England side take on a Neston CC Select XI on Thursday, July 29.
The game will be preceded by a corporate lunch including an auction which will raise further funds for the charity.
Anne Jackson, Chief Executive of NWCRF, said: “We are thrilled that the Old England team has asked to come back for a second year and that Neston CC will again be hosting the event.
“Hundreds of people came to watch last July despite the weather not being the best. If the sun shines we would hope even more people will turn out to support our charity and enjoy a great day’s cricket.”
Former England cricketer Jim Parks, who now manages the Old England side, said: “All of the players who played last year said how much they enjoyed the day and, more importantly, how keen they were to support such a fantastic cause.
“We hope to again be able to help North West Cancer Research Fund raise thousands of pounds towards vital research into the disease.”
Phil Davis, chairman of cricket at Neston Cricket Club, said: “We are delighted to again play host to Old England and to be supporting such a great charity with so much history in the North West.”
NWCRF funds research into the causes of cancer and how it spreads. Almost 90p from every £1 donated to the charity goes directly into funding this valuable research.
NWCRF is made up of 28 committees, based all over the North West of England and North Wales, who work tirelessly to fundraise for the charity.
