PATIENTS PROVIDE INSPIRATION FOR MARATHON GRAN

12 April 2010

A grandmother from Southport is making her final preparations for the trip to London and 26.2 miles of fundraising success.

Angela McKenna, a district nurse for Southport, will this month run the Virgin London Marathon for the second time (25th April 2010) and raise cash for North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF) in the process.

Inspired by her patients’ moving battles with cancer, Angela will take to the streets of London along with another 30,000 people to raise money to fund research into the causes of cancer and how it spreads.

Angela’s marathon task began as a hobby which would help shed a few pounds and rapidly developed into a passion for running, taking her to the New York Marathon in 2007 and her first London Marathon in 2008.

“I wanted to lose some weight and I looked for advice on how to run on the internet. It seemed simple enough so I began with short distances and pretty soon I was hooked. It’s such a freeing experience to put on your trainers and go for a run and if I can use my passion to raise money for a great cause then I’m happy.

“I’ve seen what cancer can do to people and North West Cancer Research Fund supports so many valuable investigations into the disease, that it was the obvious choice,” said Angela.

Angela, 46, is being supported by sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues, but if you would like to sponsor her and her London Marathon challenge, please visit her Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/Angela-McKenna

Anne Jackson, Chief Executive, NWCRF said: “Congratulations to Angela! She is one of 10 other runners supporting North West Cancer Research Fund. We are so grateful to all of these brave athletes and wish them the very best of luck.”

North West Cancer Research Fund is able to direct almost 90p from every £1 donated to the research of cancer by keeping its administration costs to a minimum.
