RAF SHAWBURY DOES ITS BIT TO BATTLE CANCER

14 April 2010

Trainee Flight Operations Assistants from the Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Shawbury will be put through their paces at this year’s Cholmondeley 10k Run on Sunday (18th April 2010).

15 trainees and five of their instructors, will take part in the run which is held every year around the grounds of Cholmondeley Castle to raise money for North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF).

Corporal Mike Jones, one of the instructors from RAF Shawbury taking part in the run said: “I saw a banner for the Cholmondeley Run whilst traveling on the motorway and thought it would be a great event for the trainees to be a part of. “At RAF Shawbury, we’re really keen to raise as much money as possible for local charities and taking part in challenges such as this also keeps our fitness levels up and helps with our training.

We’re all really looking forward to taking part.” Registration for the Cholmondeley Run begins at 9am, with a minimum entry donation of £10 per person, all in aid of NWCRF. NWCRF funds research into the causes of cancer and how it spreads. Over 90p from every £1 donated to the charity goes directly into funding this valuable research.

The NWCRF is made up of 28 committees, based all over the North West, who work tirelessly to fundraise for the charity. Primrose Dewhurst, Secretary of the NWCRF’s South Cheshire committee which has organised the Cholmondeley Run for the past 20 years, said: “We already have over 100 entrants for this year’s run and if the weather stays as glorious as it has been, we hope to have many more people coming down to take part.

“The team from RAF Shawbury have been really enthusiastic entrants and I’m looking forward to seeing them take part in many a Cholmondeley Run to come.”

The Cholmondeley Run is also open to families who wish to take a more gentler pace, by taking part in the Family Fun Run around the grounds of the castle.

The NWCRF’s South Cheshire committee aims to raise £2000 from this year’s run, with RAF Shawbury pledging £100. For more information on taking part in the run, visit www.thecholmondeleyrun.co.uk. To support the team from RAF Shawbury, visit www.justgiving.co.uk/supersunday.
