CYCLISTS GEAR-UP CHARITY EFFORTS
15 July 2009
A group of North West cyclists have been putting in the extra leg-work to help raise money for charity.
John Welsby, MD of opticians Conlon and Sons, was joined by seven of his friends and family, who took to their bikes last month in an effort which saw them raise over £4,000.
The group set out from Southport to tackle the Trans Pennine trail – a cycling route which stretches over 225 miles coast to coast across the country to Hornsea. The trail travels through Liverpool, Stockport, Penistone, Barnsley, Conisbrough, Selby and Hull.
John, from Warrington, said: “My son and I decided to donate our part of the money raised to North West Cancer Research Fund.
“We had four days to complete the cycle, which equalled about 23 hours in the saddle – it was hard work, but definitely worth it!”
North West Cancer Research Fund, which will receive over £800 of the money raised, praised John and his fellow cyclists for their efforts. The Chief Executive of the charity, Anne Jackson, said: “It is fantastic to see people doing amazing things for charity.
“North West Cancer Research Fund supports research into the fundamental causes of cancer and we simply could not afford to fund it without the help of people like John and his friends – it is much appreciated.”
The other charities to benefit from the group’s efforts were the British Heart Foundation, Claire House and the National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease.
